But I don't really know why I'm so strongly opposed to tattoos... it's happened suddenly. I see somebody I respect get a tattoo, and I have a hard time not thinking less of them.

I'll only start getting bothered by tattoos when people start tattooing Rainbow Dash onto to themselves.

Unless that trend is already happening.
AverageGuy
I said a lot of idiotic, stupid things. I guess I'm just bitter.
Anyway, I'll be revising my perspective on this and other matters. I don't want to be that guy.
Yaoi Huntress Earth
I have no problem with them. I do enjoy them for their artistic and aesthetic quality.
Badass Overlord
Um, some guy I know has the curse mark from Berserk tatooed on his neck, and it looks burned in like the actual one, so yeah tattoos are badass.

But when Justin Bieber gets a tatt and people ACCEPT it, that just shows that something is wrong with society. Suddenly, tattoos aren't so badass anymore, are they Shmeckie?

My post as it stands is not a commentary on tattoos. It's a commentary on how everybody's getting one... the religious, the pretentious, and so forth. I suppose the title could be a bit more direct, but eh.

Oh man, I know EXACTLY what you mean! Here I am, just about to cover my body in ink from head to toe with gang symbols, Latin phrases, kanji, hanzi, random pictures of cars, flowers, dragons, crosses, Darwin fish, and stars of David, and then this bitch-ass punk Beiber goes and makes tatts all MAINSTREAM and shit?! Hell, I ain't goin' to no car jacking club of the month looking like no fuckin' pop star wanna be or some lame-ass college kid, sure 'nough. You feel me, dawg?

I was going to laugh, but then I remembered there are a lot of people who really do think like that.

Now you've got me all bummed out, TigerEyes.

As someone who has designed tats in the past, I'm going to say that tattoos can be considered a work of art. But it all depends on the tattoo itself. It is really best though to get something that means something to you.

As for tattoos becoming mainstream I have no real issues with it, especially since the number of people getting them has increased. Sixtry years ago the only groups that had tats were sailors and bikers. They gotten mainstream thanks to 80s rockstars. So anyone afraid that Justin Beiber is going to make tattoos lame don't need to worry. Pretty much anyone can get a tattoo.

Ironically I don't have any on me. I will by the end of the year though and I will be designing it myself
Zana
I will never get a tattoo. Partly because I'm not sure I'd want something permanent (sans lazers) drawn on me, but mainly because I'm terrified of needles.

I don't mind them, though, when they're done tastefully and aren't over your entire body. My brothers have some tattoos, and my own mother wants to a get matching one with me. ("I'll get Pooh bear and you get Tigger!" Actual quote.)

There are some really bad ones, though. Just google "bad tattoos", it's hilarious. Also beware the foreign symbols. I found a site once where people could upload pictures of their tats to get them translated, something they probably should have done beforehand, since a lot of them did not mean what they were supposed to mean. Some didn't even mean anything at all.

I think tattoos can be pretty cool as long as they're done with a certain degree of good taste and style in mind. I'd actually like to get one myself someday, but sadly my OCD will likely never allow me to settle on a design I'd be happy with for any length of time.

On that note, I do agree that it becomes a little harder to respect someone who dives in and gets a tattoo without giving it any forethought or taking any time to research the credentials of the artist. If you're feeling wild and impulsive, then dye your hair a wacky color or something like that—if you regret your decision later, then at least it's not permanent. After all, tattoos don't always turn out as nice as TigerEyes' sweet Yakuza body mural of a kanji-covered koi fish stabbing a dragon nailed to a cross propped up on a bloody heart with "MOM" written on it in Latin.

I just have too low of a threshold of pain for one. I might even check out that new tattoo competition show on Spike.

This. Just all of it. Yeah.

I have no problem with tattoos. I don't have any myself, simply because I've never really desired one, or had anything significant enough in my life with enough staying power that I wanted to get a tattoo relating to it.

I think there's nothing wrong with tattoos, as long as they're well thought out, significant to you, and in a tasteful part of your body. NOT like the holly wreath MoA has tattooed around his dick. Come on man we know you like Christmas, but really?
Carnage
This is SO weird. I was about to make a topic about tattoos when I saw this.

I have about 10 tattoos.

I think that if they are holding a meaning to you, then good on you.
I have one that is a memorial tattoo for my daughter, who died shortly after birth, and some people have said that it is tacky and stupid. And it is in an extremely obvious place. I have a tattoo (moto tat) on my back, I have one that signifies when I cheated death, I have ones representing my deployments, I have also numerous religious style tattoos.

I love tattoos. I will continue to get them as long as I live, as long as they hold importance to me.

By the way, I'm guessing this is the tattoo close to your heart that you and Shmeckie were talking about in the picture topic? I agree; that is a nice gesture.

It was supposed to be a wreath of a thorns because I thought it would help me score with women who really into metal, but I guess I was slurring my words pretty badly when I told the guy what I wanted.

Seconded. I can't fathom how someone would think that was at all tacky.

Feeling things for others is so corny, you guys. Welcome to the age of self-absorbed, entitled fucktards! Now where's my iPhone for Christmas?! What?! You didn't get me one?! I HOPE YOU ALL FUCKING DIE!!! No one in this world has it worse than me, I swear!

So what if your grandma died, bro, she was old! Let's go get hammered! What?! Her funeral?! Psh, that'll be boring, dude, c'mon! Oh, whatever, fucking crybaby...

Yaoi Huntress Earth
Maybe I'm just lucky that many of the people I've known from my generation and younger are decent people. Though I've come across plenty of manipulative leeches who will screw with your head and use you up, but they still had jobs.
Tonfa
The best tattoos are on people who think random ass kanji (Chinese/Japanese characters) are badass not knowing what the hell they mean or completely misinterpreting the character.

Yaoi Huntress Earth
Reminds me of a story I read in Maxim (the subject was pranks) and this guy and his friend, Larry, got their names written in kanji and the guy decided he wanted his as a tattoo. Then found out after Japanese people were calling him Larry that his friend had switched the pictures on him.

So do people in Asia get tattoos of random English words?

Thirded. Meaningful tattoos are the most legit. Tacky is the lady I see at the store all the time, the one with black stars outlining her eyes and face.
Carnage
Are we allowed to post our tattoos here!? I SO would, since mine are covered all the time.
Shmeckie
That would be better for the forum member photo thread.
Maniak
I join the others who says that tattoos are actually awesome, if you know what you want and if it is really good from an artistic point of view/symbolizes something you hold dear.

That said, the so called "tramp stamps" or "ass antlers" as some people call them in germany, are something I don`t like. It looks good at "some" people, but that percentage is very small. Also, to quote a comedian in that regard:

I can`t help myself. I always have to think that if you take your tramp stamped girlfriend from behind, it must look as if a moose is giving you a blowjob.
Meow Mix
Tattoos are great, and they can be awesome as hell if they're of something cool, if you have good intentions behind it (like an in memorium tattoo for a dead loved one or to show your devotion to something important in your life), is drawn extremely well... etc etc I love tattoos.

I kinda want to get one - kinda. It'd probably be small though, and somewhere where it wouldn't be seen too much like somewhere on my back or my ankles. Since sadly if you want to get a good job, tattoos can be something that are really looked down upon, which just sucks balls IMO.

But yeah tattoos = kickin' rad.

I've read about that somewhere, but I don't have a link for it.
Tonfa
From what I understand, Asia has a tendency to romanticize the English/Arabic characters in the same way the West does to kanji. I've actually seen T-shirts that do in fact have a bunch of random letters organized in some kind of pattern without any meaning whatsoever.

Its actually pretty easy to tell the difference between Engrish and "trendy gibberish" (for lack of better words).
Yaoi Huntress Earth
There's an interesting factiod that tattoo artist have issues with finishing another artist's tattoo. A blind date once told me about a friend who had to travel across the state to find the original artist to finish his Bettie Page tattoo.
xoxjoanxox
I think tattoos can be really cool. Just don't get like... covered from head-to-toe in them or pretend it's a 'cutie mark.'

I wouldn't get one though because they must hurt like fuck. Hell, I haven't even gotten my ears pierced.
Zana
Getting your ear lobes pierced isn't that bad, actually. It's just a quick, sharp pinch, assuming it's not your friend doing it with an ice cube and a needle. And putting in the earrings themselves is painless.

I like to think there's some guy in Japan with some nonsense English inked into his arm. It would be funny to see, and make an excellent point to someone who's about to get some kanji tattoo just because it looks cool.
Yaoi Huntress Earth
Speaking of tattoos, I just watched the first two episodes of Ink Master (the tattooing competition) and it's pretty interesting so far. If not just looking at the tattoos on the main site. So far I'm starting to dig James Vaughn's stuff.

Thats super true! I got a tattoo when I was in NC and I wanted to get it touched up eventually when I got to Hawaii (this was about... 4 years after I got the tattoo) and when I went to see if I could, they pretty much refused to touch it up. Said they dont "fuck with other artists work".
So I had to wait to get it touched up. Ugh. confused.gif
But now, out here, I go to the same place all the time, so they are all cool and friendly.

I'm actually drawing up my rib piece that I want to get, its going to have my "kids" (my siblings that I raised and had live with me for years) involved. So I am excited to get working on that one.
The Two-One-Five
I hate to revive a dead topic but it seemed relevant. So, this guy from my shop got an EGA tattoo straight out of boot and then later ended up getting "fuck the" right above that when he became a shit bag. Now that he's trying to go into MSG duty, where your tattoos can get you disqualified, he ended up covering the "Fuck the" part converted into a tribal tatto. So now he has a random tribal tattoo for no apparent reason. And that's a lesson well learned.
Screaming_Soulcatcher
Tribal Tattoos suck anyway

Seriously, they are just as idiotic as barb wire tattoos

From what I understand, tattoo removal is actually quite affordable now, contrary to the idea that tattoos are in any way permanent. If this guy paid to have it converted, he clearly didn't check his facts. sad.gif

I personally would never get one unless I survive some sort of major disaster such as a hostile computer takeover, zombie outbreak, Reaper invasion of Earth. That sort of thing.

I was opposed to them (when I created this thread) simply because I associated them with somebody I had grown to dislike, but now I'm thinking I might get a triforce tattoo on the back of my left hand to ease the stigma. It might sound like an odd or a geeky tattoo, but it holds a great deal of significance for me.
Arc Baltic
I'd be for tats if they weren't another piece of crap that can keep you from getting a job. I have thought about tattoos I'd want on my hand that would be badass then realize that if I want to get anywhere in Corporate Asinine America its just something that holds ya back. The reality that every person isn't free to be a unique snowflake is kinda annoying.

Rise, thread!
So, my mom told me I can get a tattoo! Woot. Now, I'm trying to figure out what I should get. MoA's already given his opinion, but, you know, that would cost too much.

Now, as a few of you know, I do origami. So, since a tattoo is supposed to hold significance, it needs to have an origami theme. I'm thinking either crane (which is what most people seem to do, but you can do more with it) or duck (because...yeah).
Thoughts?

Negaduck, then. Also, what's the mermaid-rule?
oneluckyduck
The Mermaid Rule is half joke, half serious statement, that goes something like this- "If you are a hairy guy and you get a tattoo of a beautiful mermaid, please shave. Because who wants to see a hairy mermaid?"
