You know, just doing a search on Google for "data recovery" brings up a ton of results for places that will do that sort of stuff for a few hundred rather than over a grand.

Yeah, I did quite a lot of shopping around before settling on anybody, and I'm actually looking at pretty standard rates. Had the place I sent it to been able to recover the data alone, that would have cost me a little under $300 to a little over, depending on various factors... As soon as you get a clean room involved, though, the absolute rock-bottom fees start at around $800, and can go as high as $2,500 in some cases. Any place that claims to have access to that kind of technology with fees substantially lower are probably not the most reliable companies out there, and my hard drive is in such a delicate state that I don't want to risk having some morons damaging it to the point where nobody can get anything off of it.

I don't mean to sound cynical but what really is at a loss here? I don't know what you have on your harddrive that would be valuable enough to justify $1,200. I know everything from the past 6 years but what is it? I imagine you'd get everything you had out like a horny guy walking into a brothel.

Right now the site is still up without that harddrive. So I don't understand why this harddrive is a big deal. Flailing about saying everything is lost doesn't make much sense.

Augh, Jesus Christ... Okay, so a server crash erased all the posts on every forum on the network (including this one, obviously) made within the last 48 hours or so. That means that all the epic posts I made explaining why I refused to accept donations got erased as well, and damned if I'm re-typing all of 'em.
