Hey guys, got a little bad news to share... Apparently my hard drive could no longer bear the burden of all the horrible fanfics and pictures of asshole-ugly cosplayers I had stored on it, so it committed suicide. I've tried just about everything to get it working again, but after two days of fucking with it and trying various alternative startup and system repair methods, I can't even get Windows to load. I'm going to go ahead and pronounce my computer dead so that the process of mourning can begin.
My plan of action right now is to buy a new system (something I've actually been planning to do for quite some time now, since my old one was shit), and rely on the aid of a professional PC repair specialist to transfer the data on my old hard drive over to the new one. This is, of course, assuming that all my old data is still intact... As far as I know, it should be, but I'm really not sure at this point. If it isn't, however, PA is in trouble. In any case, I wanted to warn you guys that I might be a little hard to get a hold of for the next few days, or however long it takes to get this whole mess straightened out. I can still get onto the internet from my laptop and access the forums and all that (I haven't checked my e-mail yet, but I'll take care of that soon), but I probably won't be on as much. It's kind of a hectic time right now, plus I don't have access to most of the files and stuff related to the site, so any communication in regards to receiving or editing content for PA will have to be put on hold. I'll keep you guys updated on the unfolding saga of my infinite misfortune. In the meantime, if you don't see me on the forums much or notice that nothing is happening with the site, well, now you know why. -------------------- To have hope is to admit you are powerless.

Plus the Mac Book look a lot cooler then the old iBooks. We have a contract with an American school in London, which every kid gets a Mac Book. They have just finished school for the year so we have had deliveries of 50 plus Mac Book's for repair.... not that great but it is a great way to see any trends coming out. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

No offense guys, but I'd rather lose my house than use a Mac.
As for the data, I wish I had more to report after all this time, but things are still unfortunately up in the air. My PC has been in the possession of a computer repair guy for over a week now, but the guy is currently in the middle of a messy divorce which is making progress on the data recovery extremely slow. I'm going to give him a few more days, then get my system back regardless of whether he's "done" or not and take it to someone else if I'm not happy with how much he was able to recover. On the negative side, my bill is already in excess of $300 due to him having to use some "very expensive tools" to probe my hard drive, which is "very far gone" as he put it. Taking it to a second outfit would likely double that amount, which sucks because it seems like an expense that could have been avoided. We'll see what happens, though... Just know that I'm currently trying everything in my power to save EDIT: Oh, almost forgot! I did order a brand new (and vastly superior) system to replace my old one, and it should arrive later this week. So at least I'll have a fully-functioning computer all ready to put my old data on, if/when I get it back. -------------------- To have hope is to admit you are powerless.

What kind of computer did you get, MoA?
I just got some new hardware myself -- a new, pretty decent MacBook (13"/2.4GHz Core 2 Duo/4GB RAM/160GB HD), and I'm about to build a new desktop (2.66GHz Core 2 Quad/8GB RAM/500GB HD) inside of a nice Dell case I got on eBay (I've never found a retail case I like, plus I'm a little OCD about matching the case with the monitor and keyboard and shit). |

You can get a pretty nice Vostro 200 case for $55 shipped with a 300W power supply on eBay. I found the power supply worthless since I needed something more, but still a good deal for just a case actually.

That's a pretty sweet looking case. I'll have to look into that and try to budget something out. Cool, thanks.

It's a custom Visionman system outfitted with an Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 2.8GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 250GB SATA II HD, and ATI Radeon 3200/3450 Hybrid Crossfire graphics cards. I wanted a computer that would allow me to play some of the newer PC games coming up here, and while it isn't tippy-top of the line or anything, I think I got a pretty good system considering I only had an $800 budget to work with.
Here's a picture of the case: ![]() The clear side panel is going to be kind of wasted since it'll be inside a shelf in my desk where you can't even see the sides, but overall I think it's a pretty simple, tasteful design for a gaming system. At least it doesn't have one of those gaudy front panels with silver plastic inserts and multicolored backlights that are supposed to make your computer appear all futuristic but actually just look ridiculous. -------------------- To have hope is to admit you are powerless.

A little update for anybody who cares... I finally got my PC back yesterday, and with it, a disk containing everything that the guy I hired to recover the contents of my hard drive was able to get. Unfortunately, what he as able to recover was practically nothing. I got a few program files, the contents of my Favorites and Downloads folders, and a couple of image files that were on my desktop. Nothing at all related to PA, though.
My next step is going to be taking my hard drive to a company that specializes in data recovery. I found a place that's supposedly pretty reliable and claims to use digital repair and recovery tools that are on par with what the FBI uses for this sort of thing. Unfortunately, they charge an arm and a leg, but if I can get enough of my files back, it'll be worth it. I plan on contacting them tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get things rolling with them pretty quick and have some idea of how much they'll be able to recover by the end of the week. Also, according to UPS tracking, my new system should arrive tomorrow! Again, that doesn't have much impact on the situation with PA right now, but at least it means I'll have a computer all set up and ready to go if and when I get the necessary data files back. -------------------- To have hope is to admit you are powerless.

Tough break on not getting the data back through that guy. I hope this company provides better results.
Congrats on the new computer arriving soon though. -------------------- |

could even use the old PC to run back ups once you get the whole lot back....or as a media server for your home. The possibilities are endless (cue rainbow)

Uh, yeah, my old PC is actually a piece of shit with no HD, so I'll probably just trash it.
Got my new system up and running, though! I'm still configuring/installing/customizing everything right now, but I can already tell that this new computer is going to work so much better that it's almost surreal. It's so fucking fast, and I can't believe how quiet it is. I'm actually glad the edges light up, otherwise you'd have no idea the thing was even on... I can't wait to see how Battlefield 2 runs on that puppy! Unfortunately, I ran into a bit of a snag regarding the data recovery business. The people I had originally planned to send my hard drive to have apparently gone out of business. Whoops! I've got a few more potential local places I got out of the phone book lined up, though, so hopefully one of them will be able to handle the job. I'll try calling some of them tomorrow, and see who sounds like they have the best tools for this sort of thing. -------------------- To have hope is to admit you are powerless.

Congrats on the new system, though I think it has a glitch where it makes pictures of rainbows and thumbs-up that I post disappear.
