Hey guys, got a little bad news to share... Apparently my hard drive could no longer bear the burden of all the horrible fanfics and pictures of asshole-ugly cosplayers I had stored on it, so it committed suicide. I've tried just about everything to get it working again, but after two days of fucking with it and trying various alternative startup and system repair methods, I can't even get Windows to load. I'm going to go ahead and pronounce my computer dead so that the process of mourning can begin.

My plan of action right now is to buy a new system (something I've actually been planning to do for quite some time now, since my old one was shit), and rely on the aid of a professional PC repair specialist to transfer the data on my old hard drive over to the new one. This is, of course, assuming that all my old data is still intact... As far as I know, it should be, but I'm really not sure at this point. If it isn't, however, PA is in trouble.

In any case, I wanted to warn you guys that I might be a little hard to get a hold of for the next few days, or however long it takes to get this whole mess straightened out. I can still get onto the internet from my laptop and access the forums and all that (I haven't checked my e-mail yet, but I'll take care of that soon), but I probably won't be on as much. It's kind of a hectic time right now, plus I don't have access to most of the files and stuff related to the site, so any communication in regards to receiving or editing content for PA will have to be put on hold.

I'll keep you guys updated on the unfolding saga of my infinite misfortune. In the meantime, if you don't see me on the forums much or notice that nothing is happening with the site, well, now you know why.

Good luck with all this MoA. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Man, if you lived near me I could totally get you free work on that machine.

Is it just the Hard Drive or the whole computer?

If it is just the hard drive, put it in an airtight bag (preferably with one of those little packets of silica Gel, that absorbs water) and leave it in the freezer over night.

This shrinks the plates and heads and may let you resurrect it enough to get any data you need off it. Might be worth a google and looking into.

Sorry to 'get my geek on'.

It's not a physical drive problem, from what we can tell.

Well, I can see that everyone here is obviously distraught to hell and back over finding out that there's at least a 50% chance that the website will never be updated again and everything I've spent the past five years building will be instantly flushed down the toilet. Thanks for all your support, guys.

Whoa, whoa, 50% chance that it will never be updated again?! Please tell me that's an over exaggeration.

I'dve wished you luck, but I already read about your problems elsewhere and really had nothing useful to say about it then, and still didn't when this topic was made.

I guess I should have been more clear on what the consequences of a dead hard drive were... The hard drive in my PC contains pretty much everything related to Project AFTER; old files, works-in-progress, images, submitted content, not to mention all the tools that I use for making just about everything you see on the site. IF my hard drive is fried and that data can't be recovered, I'd lose everything. The existing HTML files that are currently online and a few image files from Sway (if he even kept any of that stuff) are about the only things I could get back, and even then, I'd lose enough stuff that even modifying and updating those would be a lot more difficult. And of course, all the old written content that I was still working on would be MIA. I don't have the time to rebuild everything from scratch, so if it ends up that I can't get the old stuff back, I'm closing the site.

Well that's certainly fucked up. It's a shame you'd close the place down. Hell, I've recovered from quite a few crashes in my time, so while I can understand your frustration, it's a shame you'd just up and dump the site.

I'm not sure I understand why you couldn't just take a few months off just to get the site back in order.

If your hard drive were a person, I'd wanna kick it's ass for being so damned unreliable and jeopardizing the website.

So, assuming you do manage to save your information, do you plan on keeping it in a separate location just in case something bad happens to it in the future? I have flash drives with files that I think are important or that I like just in case anything bad ever happens to them. I think I started to do that the first time I accidentally crashed my old computer...

Um... so assuming that the website has to go down, where could the "refuges" go to mock fics?

He could probably keep the forums open. I'm pretty sure Sway could do it if we asked him real nicely.

*puppy dog eyes at Sway*

*swears she'll never do that again, and if she does, just shoot her now*

But yeah, that sucks. That's why I never keep my important files saved to my computer anymore and have multiple flash drives.

Well, the multiple flash drives might be from the fact that I'm rather addicted to buying them. One gig more? Hellz yeah!

Err, well, that isn't really Sway's call... Don't worry about the boards going under, though. Regardless of whether or not I end up closing the site, I have no intention of shutting down these forums as long as people continue to use them.

Concerning my current situation, for those who are interested... Not much has changed at this point. I've tried every possible solution that I and everyone I've asked so far could think of with no success. I recently sent an e-mail off to a professional PC tech consultant that my family has quite a bit of history with and is very knowledgeable about these sorts of problems, but I haven't heard back from him yet. While I wait for a reply, I'm also doing a bit of research concerning what kind of new computer I'd like to get. My plan is to go ahead and buy and set up a new system as soon as I can, so that it'll be ready to receive my old system's data if we can pull it out. The chances of even temporarily repairing my old hard drive are looking pretty bad at this point, but I believe I have better odds of being able to extract the raw data off of the disk. If so, we're still in business, although it will take me awhile to get everything running smoothly again. In any case, unless this guy I contacted has some miracle solution that fixes everything, it will probably be another week or so before I have any definitive answers about the future of the site. Keep your fingers crossed, I guess.

I said you could do it. I just also said that Sway could probably find a way to do it even if you decided not to. Not that he would, but hell, he could probably just put a PA sub forum over at SOL and leave it at that.

Although I can't know much about it from being so far away from the physical computer, I'm fairly certain that the contents of MoA's drive should be recoverable by normal means from someone who knows what they're doing. MoA hasn't mentioned anything about the drive sounding weird/clicking, and the BIOS at least still recognizes it. If worse comes to worse and I'm wrong, I have no doubt that a professional data recovery company can get the data, though that would be something like $250-400 and you freeloading fucks should donate if it comes to that. It's not time to panic quite yet. smile.gif
