So I figured it's about time we got a thread for this movie, seeing as it's only the most significant thing to happen in any of our lives. Chris Nolan created what was arguably the best film adaptation of a comic book back in 2005 with Batman Begins, and he was somehow, by some insane stretch of the imagination, possibly through the use of black magic and sorcery, able to top himself with The Dark Knight, also known as that movie that broke box office records worldwide and was critically acclaimed by every single living person on the planet, yet failed to garner so much as a nomination at the Oscars for anything besides technical bullshit (and don't say "Heath Ledger," he didn't get the award because he deserved it, although he certainly did, he got it because he died; had he lived he wouldn't have gotten so much as a nomination, and we'd remember that as the biggest Oscar snub in cinematic history). Now, Mr. Nolan is going to try to top himself again with the sequel to The Dark Knight and the last in his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.

Personally, I'm a little iffy on the title. I know that Joel Schumacher's plan for the unrealized sequel to Batman and Robin was called "Batman Triumphant," and if you combine the two, I think you can come away with a pretty bitchin' title, albeit one that won't fit on a marquee. "The Dark Knight Triumphant." Anybody else like that more, or am I just bitching about nothing?

Anyway, a guy named William Shatner once said "What's in a name?" And he's right. The name's academic if the movie itself is an ass-kicking batstravaganza of film-making excellence, which it almost certainly will be. So let's get down to brass tacks and discuss what's known about the movie.

...

Not a whole lot besides the cast, which breaks down as follows:

-Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman will all be returning, which is a great sign as when you put those actors together in a movie, absolutely nothing can go wrong. You don't want to break up a winning team.

-Tom Hardy will be appearing in the role of Bane. I like Tom Hardy, but I wonder if this is the right decision. I look at him, and I don't exactly see "Hulking unstoppable monstrosity." Then again, people were questioning Heath Ledger as the Joker at first, and we all know how that turned out. And I do like Tom Hardy, so what the heck.

-Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. I...okay? I guess. No real comment on that.

-Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Alberto Falcone, the son of the crime boss from the first movie. I really enjoyed his performance in Inception, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does here.

-The most recent casting announcement is that of Josh Pence, of Social Network fame, as a young Ra's Al Ghul. I don't know much about the actor; mostly, I'm intrigued by how Ra's Al Ghul is going to fit into this movie. As long as he can pull off a decent Liam Neeson impersonation, I think I'll be pretty satisfied. This is actually rather telling about the story of the movie, and would seem to confirm at least one rumor that I've heard about Talia Al Ghul appearing; I remember hearing that she would appear, but I couldn't find anything concrete so I dismissed it as a rumor. Hearing that Ra's is going to appear, possibly in a flashback, lends some credence to that rumor.

-I don't know how reliable IMDB is, but it's listing Katie Holmes as "Elaine Dawes." Huh? Like, Rachel Dawes' sister or something? I can't find anything else about this, so I don't know what to make of it. I don't hate Katie Holmes, though her taste in men is appalling, and I wouldn't mind seeing her come back, even if it's in a different role (all but necessitated, seeing as there isn't enough left of Rachel to fill a pouch in Batsy's utility belt). She's certainly easier on the eyes than Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Anybody else have anything to add? Y'all better, because I'm not posting this topic so that it can be buried under a hundred thousand posts about fucking Glee. You people and your taste in television make me sick.

And oh, yes, please let him fuck up Ra's Al Ghoul again, please. Get Zsasz too again while your at it.

I love The Dark Knight and all, but Batman Begins. Eh, I guess it's just that it rapes Ra's and Zsasz up the ass, that's really my main fanboy gripe with it. They just don't feel anything like Ra's or Zsasz.

From an outside perspective, however, it's nowhere near as good as Batman. The Dark Knight is up there, personally I don't like it quite as much, but Begins doesn't even come close to matching Batman. It's a good movie overall, but there's no way in hell it was the best comic book adaption when it came out.

I'm interested to see what he'll do with Bane though, and hopefully he can keep the momentum from The Dark Knight going. With a cast like he's got he might be able to make it turn out really good. It's gonna be hard to make this one feel like the biggest and best without the Joker, but if he can pull it off he might be able to top even Batman.

Batman was a great superhero movie; Batman Begins was a great movie, period. That's all I'm going to say about that.

To be honest, I don't get this widespread dislike for the film's title. The Dark Knight Rises is a fine title, in my opinion. I think it will make perfect sense in the context of the movie's plot, assuming Nolan takes it in the direction I'm thinking he will—with Batman essentially having achieved villain status in the eyes of the public at the end of TDK, Rises will likely focus largely around the redemption of his image and his reclamation of the title as a hero to the people. TDK chronicled Batman's fall from grace as a symbol of hope and justice to a traitorous homicidal outlaw in the minds of the citizens of Gotham; now, in the next chapter of the story, it's very probable that we'll get to see him reclaim the people's trust and become that living embodiment of justice again. The story will quite literally tell how the Dark Knight rises.

I feel exactly the same way. Tom Hardy is not among the first hundred actors I would have pegged to portray Bane, but after the way Heath Ledger turned out, I'm not about to question the skills of Nolan's casting director.

Weird. Based on some very quick research, I'm gonna say this is yet another case of IMDB getting the facts mixed up. I guess we'll have to wait and see to know for sure, though.

IGN recently ran a story on the movie. From what I can gather it's going to head to India for a scene or two and they're gonna have a lazarus pit from the looks of it.

Remember back when they actually had to build sets? rolleyes.gif

It's tough to say what that "pit" is going to be in the final film; even the article speculates multiple possibilities. If it is indeed a Lazarus Pit, though, then we could potentially see Ra's al Ghul coming back in TDKS. Though honestly, that doesn't sound at all like something Nolan would do.

They could come up with a scientific explanation for it all. Like the Lazarus pit is actually made up of nano bots that reconstruct you over a period of years to live once more. Worked for Commander Shepard.

This. The magic becomes nanomachines-explanation already was a huge shitstain on MGS 4, so what will it do to a series that is mostly grounded in realism?

Okay not Nanobots, how about just something involving rejuvinating water that was scientifically created but has nothing to do with nanobots.

Or its true nature could be kept vague and mysterious. I don't see why they have to throw SCIENCE at everything. It's never explained how the Joker pulled off all his shit, and that's part of what made him so threatening.

I thought he pulled it off because he manipulated people into doing things for him to achieve his ends through very sick and twisted social experiments?

Okay, vagueness, that works too.
