'Tis the season. The winter season, that is.

All right, so we have pretty much the same types of shows as always.

Comedy shows which will likely be very unfunny, shows about girls becoming idols, high school slice-of-life moe shows, and harem shows.

My thoughts... Ajin looks okay, at least from the promo art. It has a high school student as the main character though. Japan is in some weird version of Speed, where if the percentage of anime that has high school characters as MCs drops below 95%, Japan will explode.

Boku Dake ga Inai Machi also seems interesting, even though the concept of going back in time to prevent a murder has been done before. I'll keep an eye out for this one.

More Durarara, one of the few good anime shows still running, and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu might be okay.

Other than that, almost everything else is exactly as it always is.

Also, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! looks like a ripoff of Ah! My Goddess. That's always nice.

Winter 2016 movies:

Free! movie. Looks gay. Koukaku no Pandora: Ghost Urn has ecchi and yuri in the tags. Together with the promo pic, that can't be a good sign.

Love Live! movie. Saw it coming. New Pokemon movie, same thing.

Attack on Titan recap movie, which I always thought those were redundant. Digimon Adventure tri is finally coming out, so that might be okay for nostalgic reasons for those who used to watch that show.

Monogatari movie. Clearly, just like the show itself, it's sure to keep everyone at the edge of their seats. rolleyes.gif

Milky Holmes movie...

Winter 2016 OVAs:

Junjou Romantica, Bikini Warriors, High School DxD, Hibike! Euphonium, Valkyrie Drive, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya, Hetalia, Working!!, Nisekoi, To Love-Ru, Shinmai Maou no Testament, blah blah blah, no one cares.

One Punch Man OVAs, that's good. Kuroko no Basket Basketball Homos OVA, if anyone's interested.

Discuss.

Active Raid looks interesting, at least.

Something about this one strikes my interest. It might just be that it has some historical backbone to it that doesn't involve Oda Nobunaga being a girl, but the fact that it's being adopted from a visual novel doesn't really give confidence. I looked it up and at least it doesn't seem to be a sex game so hopefully that'll avoid the cringy shit from Katawa Shoujo. Then again, the creators were also apparently involved in a visual novel adaptation of Ouran. I'll give it an episode to convince me it's not bad.

Well, let's see what we got this season.

Attached Image
This seems to have the most potential of the bunch. For starters, the main character is an adult and has a beard. This practically makes him an anime unicorn.
It's probably pretty shallow to judge shows by these standards, but sod it, in this day and age of shows about nothing but high school girls, it's a welcome reprieve.
It's by the same guy who did Darker than BLACK, which is a show I haven't watched, but have heard good things about, so I'm willing to give this one a shot.
Seems like it holds a lot of potential for an entertaining buddy-cop sort of thing, which is something I happen to enjoy, so yeah, this may be quite fun.

Attached Image
This, on the other hand, sounds like a travesty.
Who even came up with the idea of setting a moe-girl giant robot show in East Germany of all places. Let's be honest, the DDR isn't exactly the most sympathetic of nations, so unless you want to do a show about the hardships of living there, what with the Stasi and other bullcrap, you aren't exactly going to get the audience to sympathize with them.

Also, I like how that description explains literally nothing about the plot. Surefire winner there.

No, it's by the character designer of Darker than BLACK. And if you want to watch it, may I recommend only the first 14 episodes. You can take a gander at the rest, but they won't provide you with anything beyond the occasional short and sweet action scene and the main character looking cool.

Anyway, I've had my eye on this show for a while now. I'll check it out when I have the time, but seeing the trailer when it came out way back when has me a little worried. Everything about that green-haired girl just screams "waifu bait." Also, FUNimation's part of the production committee, and the last project they had a say in didn't exactly get the warmest reception.

Well, that shows what I know, I guess.
Still, I'm not convinced the little girl is actually supposed to be a waifu, since the show isn't tagged "romance", and I'm not convinced that anyone who would make a show that does nothing but pander to paedophiles would actually bother with an actual plot.

So you're saying that Kodomo no Jikan doesn't have a deep, thought-provoking, psychological and captivating story? I've been told otherwise by TV Tropes reviewers.

I've read the manga of this. It's actually pretty good. I especially like the murder mystery arc.

Yeah, the description is shit, so as a Muv Luv fan, here's some context.

It's set in the Muv Luv Alternative Universe (like the Total Eclipse anime was), except on a different front of the global battle against the BETA (the alien monsters), and this universe in an AU version of our own (history diverged significantly after an already altered version of WWII). It was adapted from the VN/light novels like Total Eclipse.

As for the original games, they are getting official English translations, and you can choose to keep or toss the porn (even without the porn, the story is DAMN GOOD, and some of the porn was officially cut even from the uncensored version rereleases because even the original creators thought it was tacky bullshit, on which subject I concur), and the sidestories will be soon follow.

Also, some background on the series. Muv Luv is a spinoff from an older VN called Rumbling Hearts that turned into a world of its own, and it deconstructs the shit out of the fanservicey uniform bullshit in sci-fi animu (Alternative explains the reason why they do this is to make all soldiers comfortable with the idea of sharing a foxhole with each other regardless of modesty concerns since they often won't have the luxury of being choosy, especially since over 60% of Planet Earth has gone to hell and it's getting worse by the day, and the enemy doesn't give a shit what they look like, they'll kill without remorse), covers several theories of quantum physics including parallel universes, and brutally shreds all the cliches of bog standard romantic comedies into tiny pieces by forcing the main character (who was from that universe originally in the prequel Muv Luv Extra) to be dropped into a hell on earth AU version of his own world in Muv Luv Unlimited, then he basically tries to right all the shit he fucked up in Unlimited in Alternative thanks to getting a chance to time travel back to when he first arrived in the Unlimited world.

In short, while Total Eclipse was decent, it didn't exactly set the world on fire, so I'm on the fence about this anime myself, but if you guys want to judge for yourself, hunt down the original games, Total Eclipse assumed basic knowledge of the Muv Luv world, likely this one will too.

You know what makes me upset about this season?

TOS won't have an episode out for another month or so and savage this season. Seriously, your last episode was hysterical guys.

To be honest, that sounds like the laziest and least believable excuse ever. It's training and working as a team that helps soldiers to work together even under highly stressful situations. Wearing ridiculous outfits is just distracting. And from the looks of it, they all wear highly individual outfits, so it wouldn't work as a uniform at all, losing all the benefits of using one.

Also not helping is that that one girl's outfit is coloured white-on-black, at which point she might as well point a giant target on her face, and that's not even getting into her choice of hairstyle...

Well, according to Alternative, since most forces are heavily female (since most of the males have been killed off), it's mostly for the reasons stated. Also, it's actually cheaper for them using in universe materials to make those sorts of uniforms, not to mention so much of Earth has been bombed to hell what few barrack facilities they have are unisex since they don't have the resources to construct resources for men and women anymore. Hell, they have to eat mass produced synthetic food since they have so little arable land or people to do farming anymore.

Also, the BETA attack ANYTHING carbon based, they don't really differentiate between colors. In fact, the colors are more for the benefit of the humans, so they can tell rank and unit placement more easily.

So while it's still somewhat for eye candy reasons (I'd be a lying jackass if I didn't concede that was part of the meta-reason), it does make sense in universe. In fact, In Muv Luv Unlimited, the male protagonist has to restrain
his drool the first time he sees his female allies in the fanservicey pilot suits, but has basically gotten to the point he no longer gives a damn by Alternative because he's used to it by now (the male uniforms are little better, just in case you were wondering).

Also, the uniforms differ between ranks, and it's usually cadets (those yet to be deployed) who get the most fanservicey outfits. The higher ups get uniforms that make somewhat more sense.

I like the basic idea of Muv-Luv, but the idea of playing a bunch of romance VNs so I can get the real story makes it pretty inaccessible to me. Where do I, as someone who isn't even slightly invested in the series, have to jump in to get sweet robot-on-Tyranid action without having to put up with the writer's fetishes?

Well, the only romance VN you HAVE to play is Muv Luv Extra (otherwise Unlimited and Alternative will make little sense, since they follow after it and assume you have basic knowledge of Extra)

P.S. - Extra is pretty vanilla for a romance VN with H-scenes, and it's all sugary sweet stuff, nothing gross or demented. Even the no sex scene version is the same, just fade outs where the h-scenes would go.

Extra has a bunch of little routes you can ignore (I would go down Ayamine's route though, aspects of it become very important in Alternative), but the only major routes you must play through in Extra are Meiya and Sumika's routes, and once you finish one of them, you can just skip all the previously read text in the other with the built in fast forward aside from scenes specific to those routes (only like four major scenes change in each).

Once you finish those two, Unlimited will be unlocked.

Unlimited has the same basic plot for ALL characters, it doesn't matter which ending you get (Alternative assumes all of them happened due to time loops), so as long as you beat any path on Unlimited, you can jump to Alternative.

Alternative is a very kinetic novel, meaning you are more reading the story than changing history, though there are a few minor events you can change that can tweak later events, a few choices that alter the overall ending. It will follow Unlimited to an extent, but once you deviate from the history of Unlimited, the original plot of Alternative takes off.

Also, if you want to check out the fan-translated versions first, go ahead, but small warning for Alternative: It's has at least one sex scene all future releases deleted completely as tacky, and one character death is so damn gruesome it was censored (you don't see as much of the death in graphic, sickeningly detailed majesty) because even the Japanese audiences were throwing up and crying when it happens, and even I shuddered and fought to keep my lunch down when I saw it, so this is actually a good bit of censorship (look up this scene at your own risk, even a still without sound and animation is extremely gruesome)

I will admit, it sounds cool, stupid but cool. And I do like the designs for the mechs in Muv-Luv. Might give the games a shot.

As for the list, Aijin, Active Raid, and Dimension W looks good. Rest can be sent to be trashed.

Also still holding out hope that Macross Delta is good. They might be showing the first episode early on New Year's.

Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (time traveling not-murderer show) seems like it could be really interesting. If that was a book I found in B&N I would read it in a heartbeat, so I have hope!
I feel like I read the beginning of Ajin (undying high school student show) before, and it was super nifty, so it being animated may get me back into it.
Sekkou Boys (idol marble busts show) is bizarre. That's what we'd all come up with as a parody. I will watch at least one episode of this to know if they capture the parody potential. Also I hope that the busts continue to be pictures of the real versions, like it looks like they are on the preview picture. I am prepared to be disappointed!
I don't like what I can see of the chick from Dimension W (bearded repo man and loli show), but it's mostly an aesthetic thing. I'm gonna agree with others here, that plot seems really interesting.

That all sounds really inaccessible to any newcomers. And then they apparently made an anime that requires you to already know the franchise instead of going the more logical route of creating an anime that introduces the concepts properly so they can use it as a vehicle to convince more people to buy their figurines the visual novels. It all seems pretty off-putting.

Also, could you give any specifics on that gruesome death scene? I tried googling it, but that didn't come up with anything specific. I'm kinda curious about how far they went.

Fine, the death scene spawned what is know as the "CHOMP!" meme in the ML fandom, and you get to see some of the sickeningly detailed beheading and consumption of the human body by a freakish monster ever animated. I already had some forewarning of the scene in question, knowing about the meme, but I still was horrified. Worse, it happens to one of the nicest characters in the entire series, and right after a scene that's pretty heartwarming.

That's all I'm gonna say. Look up a CG set for the game if you really must see it.
