In other news, Tropers continue to think that storytelling is like Lego blocks.

Also, the Writer's Block forum is a goldmine of ineptitude and awful:

And tropers are still scum of the Earth.

Okay, I'm a troper, but even I'm offended by that Writer's Block nonsense.

Seriously, there's a huge difference between owning a dog and owning a human being, and trying to equate the two is just horribly wrong. As for the rules on rape.......okay, that's just even more more messed up.

As for storytelling being like Lego blocks, yeah, even I don't take troping THAT literally. Tropes are things that occur in the story, but you just can't build a story literally out of tropes. Tropes are ideas and concepts are more like clay in that they are flexible and meant to shape the story, but they aren't set piece building blocks that some random idiot can lazily slap together and create an instant story.

That is, unless you want to create a lazy, uninspired mishmash of cliches.

I can't even believe they made a Periodic Table out of tropes, of all things. That's just stupid.

You know that article Dr. O wrote about TvTropes where he compares tropers to chemists who know the Periodic Table from front to back, yet can't do jack shit when it comes to chemical reactions? They just proved him right. The circle is now complete.

Also...

This Troper gave a very nasty one that was merged with a Hannibal Lecture to a bully Jerk Jock type. It can be summed up as, "I really do pity you. . .or at least I try to. . . . You are just an empty fool who tries to erase his fear that he might not get a football scholarship by bullying those lesser than him. I continue these "geeky" behaviors because they let me form at least a core of my personality. You. . .you have nothing any more other than to try to fill your empty core up with the fear of others while watching that perfect six pack decay from one too many beers." He cried and ran away, having been emotionally dissected.

And in other TvTropes news: A severely butthurt wannabe-Communist reviews 1984

QUOTE
Nineteen Eighty-Four film/book review by Belfagor 20th Jul 12 posted:
Anti-communism masked as alleged "anti-totalitarianism"

The term "totalitarianism" was a Cold War creation to compare Communism to Nazism, which is pure and simple bashing. Orwell's 1984 is a perfect example of this kind of propaganda. The book, praised beyond any objective quality, merely repeats stereotypes that would later make the fortune of Robert Conquest and similar alleged "historians". The worst part is, the author presents his view as the true Socialist one. But this is just Trotskyism and revisionism.

It's rather easy to see what lies behind the curtain: "doublethink" is a sick, twisted parody of dialectical materialism, the description of the Party doesn't show any kind of actual analysis and is just a pile of gratuitously anvilicious Complete Monster traits, Goldstein's section is nothing but an extremely heavy Author Filibuster moment to expose loads and loads of Trotskyist / Social Democratic propaganda.

As a Marxist-Leninist, I find this book utterly revolting and despicable. However, I must admit that it completely succeeds in its main target: to spread every possible lie about the Eastern Bloc and the men who carried on the results of the October Revolution, under the pretense of an "universal message of freedom" that is just imperialistic trash. It succeeds so well that most people believe this is a valid document to judge Soviet Union. What's next, Jurassic Park used as biology documentation in universities?

HOW DARE ORWELL CRITICIZE STALIN THAT WAY

QUOTE
Belfagor, in the comments of his review posted:
quote:
I see nothing about Marxist-Leninism (which is an embarrassment to Marxism anyway, which originally was more like Bakunin)

I'm afraid, but I completely disagree. Marx himself wrote about the necessity of proletarian dictatorship, which Bakunin never agreed about. Lenin described imperialism using Marxist categories and thus added substantially to Marx and Engels' work. Marxism recognizes th necessity of authority in the socialist phase (which preceeds Communism) and, dialectically, sees the difference between bourgeois authority and proletarian authority.

Also, "Stalinism" is an improper term, sine Stalin didn't actually made a substantial progress from Lenin's work. Instead, he fortified the results of the Revolution through the proletarian dictatorship (always being faithful to Marx, Engels and Lenin's teaching) and, more important, he lead (not alone, of course) USSR against Nazi Germany. Putting USSR and Third Reich on the same level isn't just historically absurd, it's offensive.

Take it from a Marxist-Leninist, I don't recall Minarchists turning a confederation of feudal states into the second most powerful State of its time.

Stalin was totally faithful to Marx and Lenin's message you guys.

QUOTE
^^ & ^ Dear lord, stop reading rubbish written using propaganda from the '30s and try to do an objective research. You could even find Oxford professors praising collectivization. I've had to sit through hours and hours of the exact things you repeat. Then I read another version that was far more supported (ever read Ludo Martens, for example?) and objective. Why don't you do the same? You know, that's what an accurate research is.

By the way, taking critics from who probably supports the US is frankly ludicrous.

My face couldn't meet my palm fast enough after reading that shit.

The hilarious part is if this dumbass had carefully read the text, Orwell pointed out that in-universe, both leftist and rightist governments have the possibly of becoming totalitarian regimes (as pointed out in the section with Goldstein's book), so it is not just criticizing communism. Hell, he even criticizes capitalism's own hypocrisies at the same time he explains the first part.

Further, in real life, George Orwell was a democratic socialist, as he feared the extremes of the right and left and believed the greatest safe guard against them was a centrist position. (and that ranting jackass rather amusingly posthumously vindicated Orwell's beliefs)

Also, George Orwell (real name: Eric Blair) was British, not American.

look at those formulas holy shit

Dilbert is Static Character + Status Quo is God + Hilarity Ensues, which is vague enough to describe any episodic comedy. Star Wars is The Dragon + You Have Failed Me + The Chosen One + Five Man Band + The Empire + Conflict, which could be the formula for basically any fantasy story. And the "you have failed me line" comes from Star Wars in the first place, which means they don't have a better description of the series than saying it's like Star Wars. Though I think the best part is how Conflict isn't in any of the others, because it's not like there's any conflict in Mass Effect or Avatar, right?

Conflict: not an essential and universal part of storytelling, but just another Lego brick you might or might not include in your story assembly line of tropes.

There's a trope page for Fluffy Pony comics

QUOTE
The premise is simple: Twenty Minutes In The Future, Hasbro creates a genetic engineering wing, Hasbio. To capitalize on the insane success of Friendship is Magic, they create the world's first "biotoy" (a term which is intentionally divisive, referring to the concept of a living thing created and marketed as if it were a toy.) This was the Fluffy Pony, a housecat-sized creature that resembled a G4 My Little Pony with wool-like fluff. Fluffy ponies are bio-programmed; though they have their own minds and can differ drastically, they all start off with the same core information. They innately understand English and can speak their own cutesy dialect, commonly referred to as Fluffspeak. Fluffspeak is mostly an executive's idea of what sounds cute (replacing L and R with W, mispronouncing big words, adding -ies as a plural, etc) combined with a sanitized dictionary (poopies, no-no place.) Fluffy ponies come in 4 races: Earth Fluffies, Unicorns, Pegasi and Alicorns. The differences are mainly cosmetic (pegasi cannot fly, unicorns can make harmless sparks at most), though their personalities are

QUOTE
All Crimes Are Equal: Who's delivering the punishment usually matters a lot more than whatever the fluffy did.

Hugboxer: Pooped on the floor, threw a tantrum, broke a priceless heirloom? Spanking, time in the Sorry Box, loss of toys. Rarely more than that.
Abuser: Turning into a brat? Death. Poop on the ground? Death. Don't finish your food? Amputation (or death if you can't amputate any more.)
Shelter worker: As fluffy shelters are for-profit, you'll probably be killed if you're not sellable.

QUOTE
Break the Cutie: The goal of many abusers and a side-effect of fluffy feral life.

QUOTE
Bring My Brown Pants: It is extremely easy to scare a fluffy into losing bowel control. Some depictions of fluffies have them shitting themselves constantly.

QUOTE
Eat the Evidence: Fluffies usually use this as their go-to method for hiding evidence, as they have few other options. Occasionally enforced by owners or abusers, in the case of "bad poopies" or a dead foal.

QUOTE
False Rape Accusation: Smart female domestics who want babies will let feral fluffies mate with them and then invoke this trope. As most fluffies are bad liars and both humans and fluffies will rarely harass a rape victim, the mare usually pulls it off. Occasionally used by feral mares to advance their position (accusing the Smarty of raping them and letting the herd attack.)

QUOTE
Share Phrase: Due to their cookie-cutter genetic programming, totally different fluffies will "come up with" the same catchphrases.
"Hewwo, new fwend?" -to anything, including inanimate objects and clearly dangerous people.
"How time tiww weggies?" -fluffies who lose all their limbs fancy this. This happens more than one would think.
"Wan die" - when a fluffy no long wants to live, it will enter a loop and continuously say this.

Fuck you, Tropers

Holy shit, that is seriously creepy and messed up.

I've seen a few episodes of MLP with my nieces, and it's pretty decent for a kids cartoon (not sure what the draw is for adults myself), and while certain segments of the adult brony fandom are creepy as hell, this is just fucking depraved.

However, while the stuff on the page is fucked up, I'm even more worried about the mental state of those who get off on this shit.

The Superjail! fanfic Extended Stay has a few of its own. First off, in the tenth chapter, we find out that the reason Ultraprison can't just leave after they've refueled is because Mistress is pregnant by Warden. At no point during the fanfic up until that point did we see Mistress exhibit any pregnancy symptoms, leading to the conclusion that it was merely an Ass Pull just so Warden and Mistress would have a reason to stay together. Another thing to bring up is that Ultraprison is supposedly only stopping at Superjail (because it just so happened to be the nearest place to land) for a limited time just to refuel. With that said, Mistress being pregnant would mean that they were apparently staying for about several weeks, two or three months at the most, while they had to fuel up to get home.

...

Secondly, remember in Chapter 12 when Warden and Mistress were getting married? And remember at the end of that chapter when Mistress (who was eight months pregnant, mind you) suddenly went into labor and Warden had to send Jailbot and NOVA to fetch a doctor? Yeah, here's a good question: how the hell could they have not known that would happen?! How did they overlook the possibility that maybe, just maybe, they would need a doctor on standby in case anything went wrong? And why didn't Jared or Cherice warn their bosses about it? While one could make the argument that it would be okay for Warden and Mistress to overlook that tiny detail (as well as make some mistakes) because they are young lovers who are just about to become parents, it still baffles me.

A troper bitches about a Superjail! fanfic in the Wall Banger section. Now I've seen everything.

I can't even look at the Fluffy ponies tropes without feeling angry and slightly nauseous. Dear god.

Lets look at something less terrible, and slightly less pathetic. Best Known for the Fanservice? Sounds promising.

QUOTE
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha only had one fanservice episode, very early in the series, but it's the reason most commonly cited (right before the Transformation Sequence) by people who don't want to watch it.

Is that the sound of Doctor O groaning in the distance?

QUOTE
Queen's Blade has a fairly good story behind it, most people probably never saw it. Everyone either just hears about the "acid boobs" in the first episode and turns away, or conversely got hooked on the series BECAUSE of the acid boobs.

QUOTE
"Of course Empowered is a good series! It's got a truly courageous female character who highlights the inherent sexism in superhero comics. It does surprising things with its main cast's character development. It's really funny. It's got more bondage and Clothing Damage than you'd think possible to fit in a comic... hey, where are you going?"

Yeah, I would walk away from anyone who said Empowered was a good series.

QUOTE
Skullgirls has a rather cool art style, a good story for a fighter, some interesting characters with personalities that shows they actually have more depth to them then just their looks, some even having a tragic past but still been an up beat inspiration and good role model, and is an overall fun and solid tournament fighter but most people who haven't played the game for more then 10 minutes or at all often get stuck on its admittedly not so hidden fan service. Keep in mind said fan service is played for laughs and is only focused on for a few moments to deliver a punchline or two once in a while and then the game moves on and usually stays focused on the story for the most part.

The only thing I'm surprised about is how KLK hasn't gotten mentioned yet.

Hey, let's look at the page for Gone home. It's arty, has lesbians, I bet they love it.

QUOTE
Cliché Storm/Tastes Like Diabetes: The harshest criticisms to the game put it in this light. Many argue that if they had flipped the gender of one of the characters, but left everything else intact, the game would have been bashed as a generic teenager love story with an unhealthy message (running away with your loved one when you're only 18.

QUOTE
They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Dark and stormy night. Left all alone to explore a huge house. Uncovering secret passages and occult like items in the house. Details of some of the family members leading to some questionable character traits. All this is ignored, in favor of a story about Katie's little sister, Sam, and her relationship with a girl she met named Lonnie.
Even some of Sam and Lonnie's more interesting characteristics, such as Sam's creative writing and Lonnie's anti-authoritarianism become overwhelmed by their relationship. In the words of some critics, they stop being people and are just girlfriends.

QUOTE
Glurge: Lonnie's initial coming onto Sam is reciprocated, but still uncomfortable for Sam. The ending is more severe though, with Lonnie and Sam running away to be together, but not before Sam steals all the electronics in the house. It's worth noting Sam hadn't graduated yet either and ran away from her creative writing course that she was excited to be in. All to pursue a teenage romance that could be just as prone to burning out after a time of fiery passion as straight teenage romances are.

Holy shit, even TVtropes thinks this thing is stupid.
