So my dad came into my room asking me to search my things to see if I had CD for the printer that had a scanner because he was, for some reason, unable to go get it off the internet. I was pretty sure that I didn't have it, but went searching anyway.

After a few minutes, I found my copy of Super Mario Land, the first and only Game Boy game I ever had (not counting GBC games or my little brother's Wario Land 2) and the first game I could say ever truly belonged to me. Figuring that searching any longer was pointless, I decided to go play the game I hadn't touched since I was in the first grade (or at least I think) with the intention of beating it for the first time. Today was the day I realized (or remembered) that the DS couldn't play Game Boy (Color) games. Luckily, my GBA was ontop of my 360, so I just used that instead.

I'm glad I decided to play this because I enjoyed it. I was surprised to see that worlds only had 3 levels rather than 4. I got a Game Over twice (with a continue) at level 3-3 a few minutes ago. I really like how fireballs ricochet off of walls until it hits an enemy or fades out, but that gets kinda annoying when it becomes trapped in a loop because you can only have one out at a time. I also really enjoyed the end of the game goals. In all normal levels but one, where I slipped off the ledge, I got to every bonus game. Unlike what I did when I was younger, I killed the first two bosses rather than run past them and I think I'm gonna do this for all worlds in an attempt for a really high score, unless things get too hard.

While the game is fun to play, I have to say that the gameplay is very clunky. I think the original Super Mario Bros. may have played a lot like this. I never cared for how going left was impossible, but that was tolerable. What I really don't like is moving in mid-air. It's really difficult to catch a platform that you jumped just a bit too far to reach without moving backward. This becomes a huge problem when attempting to traverse many fast, awkwardly moving platforms over a big gap. Also, changing directions on the ground proves to be a pain at times. Another thing that I didn't like was that when an enemy damaged me, when I tried moving again, the enemy would somehow get killed, causing Mario to bounce upward, ignoring my jump command, causing Mario to go right into the pit if there's no platform below him. It's already annoying enough when this happens before getting damaged. Lastly, on one level, I got killed because I didn't realize that I could stand ontop of these falling rocks to get across some spikes.

Aside from that, the game is pretty fun. I really enjoy hearing the cave theme and the theme that plays in the non-cave levels of World 2. I also liked seeing that little cutscene that has Princess Daisy actually turn out to be an earlier encountered enemy from the world while the words "Oh Daisy!" humorously appear on the screen.

I still say Super Mario Land remains an excellent argument for the benefits of simplicity in game design, in terms of both graphics and gameplay.

I'm actually finding I prefer Neverwinter Nights' blocky graphics to NWN2's cutting-edge stuff. At least, I found the original game a lot easier to navigate.

I always enjoy playing my old Final Fantasy games over and over again. Devil May Cry and God Hand are games I frequently play over and over.

The old Persona games, the Shin Megami Tensei series, Wild Arms, the Tales series, Star Ocean and Shadow Hearts are all games I've played about ten times each. I never get tired of RPGs.

That reminds me: I enjoy FFVI more than any 3d Final Fantasy.

Agreed. FFVI is my favorite among every Final Fantasy game.

FFVI is indeed hawt. The last great Final Fantasy, if you ask me. Haven't played it in a while. Gonna hafta put it on the PSP...

I always like to give Zelda II a good thrashing when I hook up the Nintendo. And I always start playing The Guardian Legend, but never get around to beating it.

Oh! and I just found Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain in my long forgotten CD wallet. I'll have to give that a blaze-through.

It had 11 different characters with individual storylines, yet XII can't manage one.

Shadow was awesome. He'd slit his momma's throat for a nickel.

Setzer, Shadow, Locke, Terra, and Edgar were my favorite protagonists. My favorite villians were Kefka and Ultros. One was a crazy god powered clown, and the other was a perverted giant purple octopus. What more could you ask for? Oh wait, FFV's Gilgamesh was pretty damn funny too.

Not only did kefka obtain ultimate awesome powers, he fucking USED them. Wiped Moboliz right off the map!

What's Suckiroth do with his ultimate power? Use it against you in battle... and it wouldn't even kill you.

And this alone makes him awesome. That was such a great game and the females actually acted their ages, too.

lol.

Yeah, Relm acted like an annoying little brat because she was an annoying little brat. It doesn't work with Rikku, Selphie, and Yuffie since they were like 16 or 17. Relm was 12 as I recall.

Also having a yeti, a feral child, a moogle, and a mime as party members was pretty damn cool. And the summons were neat.

if I recall correctly, Relm was younger than that. Single digits, if I recall. but don't all women in anime/heavy anime video games act like that?

I just checked, she was actually ten.

No, there are the slutty ones and the dumb clutzy ones.

I find it strange that almost every conversation not already devoted to a specific game (series) tends to somehow move on to be about Final Fantasy.

Anyway, the aforementioned printer problem and sleepiness have stopped me from getting back to Super Mario Land. I'm gonna get back to it in just a few minutes and when I finish, I'm gonna go try to find and play Wario Land 2. It's times like these that I kinda wish that I had a GBASP because then I wouldn't have to turn on that light just to see what I was doing.

Agreed. Even after all these years, it's still just as good to play. A bit annoying at times when you're used to the feel of games that came after it, but still good. I'm gonna have to try Super Mario Land 2 and 3. I kinda already know what the second game was about because my older brother owned it and, back then, he'd taunt me with knowledge of an game and then kick my ass if I tried to play it...

I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles again. It's actually a really great SRPG game (that no one played according to VGChartz). The PSP sequel is definitely on my to-buy list~ Though a PS3 sequel would have been way better.

Whoa, this Video made me actually agree with Hitler about Valkyria Chronicles. Dating-Sim-elements? What were they thinking? Wasn't the shitty romance in the original painful enough? I even had to watch those flower-sniffing hippies win over a vastly superior empire, and now they pull this shit? Well, fuck you too, SEGA!

Sorry for the angry rant, it just pisses me off.

I kno rite? Actually the romance in the original is acceptable (for me at least) but I kinda get weirded out by the fact that yeah, kids with little to no military training won against an empire commanded by a copy of Lelouch and KOS-MOS. They don't even wear fucking helmets! But the game is still pretty good, one of the best SRPG's OF ALL TIME! that I've played. The anime adaptation is pretty entertaining too.

EDIT: Do you feel weird watching those Downfall videos when you can understand what they are saying but the subtitles are different?
