Adding yet another chapter to my upcoming book entitled "Super Smash Bros. Has Ruined Everything", it looks like we have yet another crossover fighting game to look forward to. This one is apparently for the PSP and pits characters from Shonen magazine up against characters from Shonen Sunday magazine. Sadly, neither of those are Shonen Jump, which means that a whole crapload of potential awesome characters won't be making appearances. Here's some info I found:

QUOTE
A new Shonen PSP fighting game has been confirmed. Looks like it's called "Shonen Magazine VS Shonen Sunday" (unconfirmed title)... The game appears to be 1 on 1 fighting game with strikers/assists. Characters confirmed so far: Negi Springfield and Asuna Kagurazaka of Negima!, Natsu Dragonil of Fairy Tail, Shinichi Mechazawa of Cromartie High School, Inu Yasha of Inu Yasha, Kenichi Shirahama of History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Ippo Makunouchi of Hajime no Ippo, Ikki Minami of Air Gear, Yoshimori Sumimura of Kekkaishi, Kaoru Akashi, Aoi Nogami and Shiho Sannomiya of Zettai Karen Children, and Hayate Ayasaki of Hayate the Combat Butler.

And here's a scan from some unnamed magazine (which probably has "Shonen" in the title because every Japanese magazine does):

I have incredibly mixed feelings on this... I could care less about Inuyasha being in the game, and the inclusion of characters from Negima requires me to fight hard not to upchuck upon reading the name of that wretched series. On the other hand, it's cool to see Natsu in there since I like Fairy Tail, and the fact that Mechazawa is playable fills my heart with a kind of joy that no woman or religious deity could ever replicate. Guess we'll see how development on this one pans out...

It's also got Ikki from Air Gear in there, which isn't too bad either.

I stopped being able to take Air Gear seriously after the seventh clip of boobs jiggling in under a minute.

Yeah, that's why I read the manga. Which, I admit, at the point that I'm at in the comic it's kinda become ridiculous. It's mellowing out though, so that's okay.

Also, the only worthwhile part of this game is beating the shit out of anyone from Negima with Mecha-goddamn-zawa...!

If you want to get technical, King of Fighters '94 was the first crossover fighting game released in the states.

Nah, that was more one company's properties mashed together. MvC (or technically, the X-Men vs. Street Fighter titles) was the first time two seperate companies did a fighter that I can recall.

Smash Bros. is responsible for the sharp increase in crossover titles within the last few years, though. The success of Melee opened the door to more ambitious large-scale crossovers both within single companies and between multiple companies, and more crossover video games spanning all different genres have been released or announced since the announcement of Brawl than in most of the years preceding that.

HOMEWORK, SON.

Eh, not really. Brawl kind of killed my interest in the franchise. It's like the Phantom Menace of video games...

While Brawl didn't wow me as much as Melee did, nor did it hold my attention as long, probably due to how the Challenges' requirements were more repetitive/boring than actually challenging, the reduced replay value in Single player mode, how laggy online play can be, and how other expected features that should've been in the game/would've made my experience way more enjoyable were left out (reasonable things, not the bull that crazy dreamers thought up), the game did nothing to kill my interest in the series.

Most of the disappointment people are experiencing with Brawl is because the game was overhyped way too much, though I suppose you can't blame some people for complaining about some features they were almost sure would make it into the game.

Hey, did we ever get a detailed explanation for why you disliked Brawl so much?

You already brought up a lot the same problems I had with it, to which I'd add the fact that the controls felt too slippery and imprecise, the Subspace Emissary mode sucked, and the roster was a disappointment with too few characters and too many clones. I mean, I wasn't expecting 100+ characters or another dozen third party guests from M-rated titles or anything outrageous like that, but the roster still felt pretty uninspired to me on the whole. It fit the game's prevalent theme of wasted potential, at least.

You also brought up a good point about the game being overhyped. While I'm fully aware that part of the blame for that rests on the fans, Nintendo also did their part to ensure the game was hyped up into some kind of digital masterwork that, in retrospect, no game could ever live up to. It didn't help that I was drunk on my love of Melee for years prior to Brawl's release, so the fact that the game ended up being a somewhat lackluster sequel came as a pretty crushing disappointment. Overall, it just didn't feel like as much fun as Melee was, which is too bad because I could have easily overlooked all of the game's faults if it was just more fun to play.

Let it be know, however, that contrary to popular belief, I don't hate Brawl. I thought the game was a disappointing follow-up to Melee and only a slightly above-average game on the whole, but I don't loathe it. That rumor is the result of the fact that I was one of the tiny handful of living things that thought the game was imperfect when it first released, and a lot of people misinterpreted that to me hating on it due to some fanboy nerd rage bullshit. I really don't hate it, though. Like I said, it's the Phantom Menace of video games; it's not really that horrible by itself, it just seems like a failure compared to what preceded it.

Anyway, now that we have that on the record, let's forget Brawl and turn out attention back to the as-of-yet-untitled PSP anime fighting game that no one knows anything about.

Holy shiiiiiiiit!

Ban goddamn Mido from GetBackers confirmed! Hell! Yes! Provided this game doesn't end up being a complete piece of shit, I think I'm going to have to import it. Unless Onizuka makes it in there, in which case I'll still get it even if it turns out to be the worst fighter since Time Killers.

Fuck yeah, Mido Ban! But why Ueki Kousuke? He does have the ecofriendly power to turn trash into trees...nevermind.

Another magazine scan with more new characters confirmed:

QUOTE
8 new characters have joined the roster: Recca from Flame of Recca, Yaiba from Yaiba: The Legendary Samurai, Tora (with Ushio) from Tora, Cyborg 009 from Cyborg 009, Devilman from Devilman, Tokine from Kekkaishi, Tiger Mask from Tiger Mask, and Joe Yabuki from Tommorow's Joe!

Recca, Cyborg 009, and Devilman are the only characters I even recognize... And still no Onizuka. Hm. :/

One other interesting thing about the new scan is that it looks as though the game has a confirmed release date for March 17th. So, less than a month to go before it comes out... Here's hoping there'll be a lot of secret characters.

Basically, there's a handful of awesome characters surrounded by a bunch of obscure and largely featureless characters that I don't care about at all. If this is the final roster, I'll might end up having to pass unless it gets around that the gameplay is absolutely phenomenal or something. Hopefully, though, there are still a few faces that have yet to be revealed... I'm really surprised they haven't announced anyone from Ranma 1/2 or Detective Conan, since those are arguably two of the most popular series ever to appear in their respective magazines. Not sure exactly how they'd even work Conan in there, but you'd think they would come up with something to get him in for marketing purposes, if nothing else.

I'm totally geeking out over Recca being in there. I fucking love that series so much. Good to see Ban Mido in there two. He's always an awesome addition.

And good God if Onizuka was put in this I would fucking have to own if simply by principle.
